Preparing your Home for Heating this Autumn
As the leaves begin to turn so too do our thoughts – to ways to keep our homes cosy this Autumn. Never before has preparing your home for Autumn been more important, as temperatures begin to fall in the face of rising energy prices. But how can you prepare your home for the cooler months while saving money too?
Give your heating system an MOT
Ensure your home is ready for Autumn by giving your heating system a once over. Turn your heating system on before the colder weather really hits to check all is in working order. Look at pipes to evaluate their condition and test radiators to see if they need bleeding. If you have a real fire, ensure chimneys are not blocked and get a sweep in if needed. You may want to book a boiler service if yours has not had one for a while. Testing your heating before the cold weather hits will give you time to fix any problems.
Reviewing the location of your thermostat could help to boost your heating’s efficiency. Thermostats measure the temperature around them, so if it is placed in the coldest room in the house, you could be overheating the rest of the home. It is also recommended to turn your thermostat down by just 1C. Doing this can save up to £80 a year on heating bills but should make little difference to the overall heat of your home.
Look beyond your heating system
Look beyond your heating system to find other ways to keep your home warm. Check the seals on windows and doors to ensure there are no draughts and fill any cracks that could be letting cold air in. A dehumidifier could also be a wise investment to combat moisture build up and consequent mould or damp caused by drying laundry indoors.
